Services

“I get it. Not everyone’s nuts about numbers.”

Most of my clients break out in a sweat when I mention break-even analysis and cringe over cash flow projections. But they all know, without strategic financial planning, discipline, and oversight, there is no business to run, no nonprofit to change the world. My super-power is taking nonprofits, mom & pops, and corporations to the next level of financial stability and growth. Start-ups, side hustles, and turnarounds, too. I paid my dues at one of the “Big 4” accounting firms and have provided business leadership and CFO services to organizations for more than thirty years. I’ve worked across all the “H” industries: (healthcare, human services, hospitality) and for arts & cultural organizations, too. I specialize in professional services and I’m invested in three things: critical thinking, measurable results, and powerful partnerships.

Just like shoes, one size does not fit all. Whether you need one solid hour of financial advice, help with a key project, or ongoing support, I will meet you where you are and help you get where you need to go.

FOCUSED CONSULTATION

Every business and nonprofit organization requires periodic financial check-ups and check-ins at different stages of growth.

  • One of my recent clients was starting an entirely new business venture. We reviewed her business plan and developed financial projections and benchmarks for new products and services so she could gauge her progress moving forward. I also worked with a local plumber eager to go out on his own. While he had sufficient operating funds for the first year, he also had a family to consider. After creating a financial strategy and discussing risks and rewards, he decided to continue building his reserves before venturing out on his own.

START-UPS & KEY PROJECTS

New endeavors, like start-ups, often require short-term professional financial support to increase bandwidth and muscle.

  • The leadership team of a private school brought me on board to provide financial support for a key initiative. In addition to developing an operating budget for this $12 million agency, I trained the team members who had little or no experience on budgeting principals, strategies, or financial reports.

INTERIM SUPPORT

Businesses and nonprofit organizations in transition often need interim professional financial support while they build infrastructure and put permanent teams in place.

  • I served as the Interim CFO for a local museum and cultural organization undergoing a transition in leadership. While the new CEO focused on building a strategic plan and team, I kept the daily financial operations running smoothly, oversaw the annual audit, led an accounting software conversion, and attended to other outstanding projects until they brought a permanent CFO on board.

ONGOING SUPPORT

While many small businesses and nonprofits don’t need a CFO on staff, many need ongoing support to operate successfully and navigate unforeseen obstacles.

  • As the CFO of a small, emergency housing nonprofit in the Caribbean, I work closely with the CEO and Board throughout the year to ensure the organization is compliant, solvent, and taking advantage of every resource available. This was especially important during the pandemic. We secured PPP loans and made strategic financial decisions to navigate during unprecedented times.

SENIOR FINANCIAL SERVICES

While it’s good to have a doctor in the family, a CFO can help seniors manage their finances and protect their assets.

  • When I became a caretaker for my father-in-law, who had moved from North Carolina to Cape Cod, I did a complete audit of his assets and expenses to ensure he met his obligations in full on time. I also found ways to save money. Similarly, when my friend told me her elderly mother had fallen prey to scammers, I helped unravel her parents’ financials, created a plan to keep them financially healthy as they age, and now check in periodically to ensure they are on track.
